Process Paper
We chose 80’s music for our topic because it was a big inspiration for many music artists of today. We thought it would be interesting to learn more about the music our parents grew up listening to. Many of the artists of the 80’s are still making music today, and we wanted to see how they started. The style of music set the tone for music today. For example, Justin Bieber’s inspiration is Michael Jackson, and he uses some of the dance moves that M.J used. Another would be Lady Gaga; she is known to be the next Madonna by her music and fashion. 80's music defines who we were, and the music held the anthems of our daily lives.
We conducted our research by finding credible sources to get the most accurate information about the artist and their music. For the videos we used the artist’s most popular songs in the 80’s and edited on IMovie. Also, our parents informed us about their favorite artists of the decade and the music they created. We listened to some of the songs of the different genres to help us get a better understanding of the musical culture.
We selected our category by looking through different topics to see what we were most intrigued by. Some of the categories were about war, presidents, and political issues. So we all agreed that the 80s musical culture would reflect our interest in music. This category helped see who our favorite artists today were inspired by. We created our project by using Weebly.com, that allows you to make your own free website. Next, we looked through artists of different genres to see which ones we recognized. Then, we researched the artist’s start in the industry, their top songs, and how they impacted culture. Then we found pictures that we thought expressed the artist best. We edited then uploaded videos to YouTube so that we could post them on our webpage.
Some facts that we learned were that the king and queen of pop music were Michael Jackson and Madonna. Also, hip- hop music reinvented itself in the 1980s. New wave allows diverse artists, and most one hit wonders, to fit into the same genre. Hair Metal was influenced by heavy metal, punk rock, and traditional rock. Finally, we learned that MTV was the starting point for countless recording artists. Overall, 80s music had an impact unlike any other musical decade prior. It was a time of one hit wonders and legendary artists whose legacies continue today.
