Run D.M.C was founded in Queens, New York consisting of Jam Master J, D.M.C, and Rev Run. In 1883, after they signed to their record label, they released their debut single, "It's Like That/Sucker MCs" which did very well on the R&B Charts. They proved they were not a one hit wonder when they released their first full-length record in 1984. Prior to them, rappers such as Grandmaster Flash typically dressed flashy with rhinestones and tight leather. Run D.M.C. started wearing "street style" type clothing with leather jackets and Adidas sneakers. They were the first group in hip-hop history to be nominated for a Grammy Award, to have a gold album, to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine, and to have videos on MTV. In late 2002, inside of his studio in New York, Jam-Master Jay was tragically shot and killed. After this tragic incident, the rest of the band officially retired the name Run D.M.C and went on to other solo projects.
